Common questions

Short answers. No jargon.

What is the VAT Annex and do I need to submit it?+
A CSV file you upload to MRA alongside your monthly VAT return. It lists every sales invoice you issued: customer BRN, supply value, VAT charged, date, invoice number. Only required if you're a monthly VAT filer (turnover above Rs 10 million). Quarterly filers don't submit one.
What if my supplier is not VAT-registered?+
Send the photo as normal. The bot looks for a TAN on the receipt. No TAN means no VAT: the full amount goes to ex-VAT and input tax is set to Rs 0. It still counts toward your total purchases.
What is the late-receipt guard?+
When you snap a purchase receipt dated in a quarter whose MRA filing deadline has already passed, Pro warns you on the spot so that VAT still gets claimed instead of quietly lost. It also flags any receipt that shows VAT but has no supplier VAT number, since you need a proper VAT invoice to reclaim input tax. The bot only warns: it never moves, re-dates, or changes your entries.
How do I link my Telegram account?+
Open the Telegram Setup page in your dashboard. Copy your pairing code. Send /link YOUR_CODE to the bot. You're linked.
Can I undo a receipt I sent by mistake?+
Yes. Send /delete to the bot and tap SALE or PURCHASE. The most recent entry of that type is removed instantly.
What happens if I send a blurry photo?+
The bot will tell you it could not read the receipt and ask for a clearer photo. No entry is saved until you confirm.
Can I ask the bot questions about my purchases?+
Yes. Type or voice-message anything like "how much did I spend at Island Marketing this month" or "what did I buy for client Leclezio". The bot answers instantly from your records.
How much does the bot remember?+
The bot keeps a rolling window of your last 10 exchanges per chat session (your message + its reply = 1 exchange). No daily cap, but memory resets when the bot restarts.

Questions about VAT in Mauritius

The rules, the deadlines, and how SnapYourVAT fits in.

What is the VAT rate in Mauritius?+
The standard VAT rate in Mauritius is 15%, applied to most goods and services. To add VAT, multiply the base amount by 1.15. To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide by 1.15. Certain supplies are zero-rated (exports) or exempt (financial services, residential rentals, education, medical services).
Who has to register for VAT in Mauritius?+
Businesses with an annual turnover above Rs 3 million must register for VAT with the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). The threshold was lowered from Rs 6 million to Rs 3 million in October 2025, which brought a large number of small businesses into the VAT net for the first time.
When are VAT returns due in Mauritius?+
VAT-registered businesses filing quarterly must submit their VAT return within 20 days of the quarter closing. Quarters end on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December, so the corresponding deadlines are 20 April, 20 July, 20 October and 20 January. Larger businesses file monthly.
What is a VAT3 form?+
The VAT3 is the VAT return form submitted to the Mauritius Revenue Authority. It reports total output VAT charged on sales and total input VAT paid on purchases for the period, and the difference is the amount payable to (or refundable by) the MRA.
What is the best app to calculate VAT in Mauritius?+
For one-off sums, any calculator works because the rate is a flat 15%. The harder problem is not the arithmetic, it is keeping every supplier invoice through the quarter and turning them into a completed VAT3. SnapYourVAT is built for that: you photograph each supplier invoice in Telegram, the VAT is captured and stored immediately, and at quarter close you receive a completed VAT3 PDF ready to transfer into MRA e-filing.
Do I need accounting software to file VAT in Mauritius?+
No. General accounting suites such as QuickBooks and Zoho Invoice can handle VAT, but they require setup and ongoing bookkeeping discipline. A small Mauritian business that only needs its input VAT captured and its VAT3 prepared can do it from a phone. SnapYourVAT requires no accounting software and no training: you send a photo of an invoice to a Telegram bot and it does the rest.
How much does SnapYourVAT cost?+
SnapYourVAT costs Rs 1,800 per month, billed in USD at approximately $39. That includes unlimited receipt photos, the quarterly MRA VAT3 PDF, itemised summaries, the AI assistant, late-receipt warnings, and both English and French support. A free 7-day trial is available with no card required.
Does SnapYourVAT file my VAT return with the MRA for me?+
No. SnapYourVAT prepares your completed VAT3 PDF so the figures are ready. You or your accountant submit the return through the MRA e-Services portal. This keeps you in control of what is filed under your VAT number.
